More Than A Logo

People often use the words logo, brand and identity interchangeably.

They're related, but they're not the same thing.

A logo is a symbol.

A brand is what people think, feel and remember about an organisation.

An identity is the collection of visual and verbal elements that help express that brand.

The confusion is understandable. After all, logos are often the most visible part of a brand. They're the thing we see on packaging, websites, vehicles and shopfronts.

But a logo alone doesn't create a brand any more than a signature creates a personality.

What Makes A Great Logo?

The best logos do more than identify.

They communicate.

Some tell a story. Some contain hidden meaning. Some simply create a memorable visual shorthand. What they all share is clarity.

  • They are distinctive.

  • They are recognisable.

  • They are easy to use.

  • They stand the test of time.

Perhaps most importantly, they feel appropriate to the organisation they represent.

A great logo doesn't try to be everything. It simply does its job exceptionally well.

Why Some Logos Last

Look at some of the world's most recognisable marks.

Many have remained largely unchanged for decades.

Not because they were designed to follow trends, but because they were designed around simple, enduring ideas.

The strongest marks are flexible enough to adapt to changing technology, media and audiences without losing their essence.

  • They work on a building.

  • They work on a business card.

  • They work on a mobile screen.

That level of simplicity is often much harder to achieve than complexity.

Our Favourite Marks

We've always been fascinated by logos that combine simplicity with meaning.

Marks that reveal something extra the longer you spend with them.

Marks that feel inevitable once you've seen them.

The logos featured below are some of our favourites, not because they're fashionable, but because they've endured. They continue to communicate clearly, adapt successfully and remain relevant despite changing times.

That's the real test of a great mark.

A Favourite From Our Own Archive

One of our favourite projects remains Noel, a simple identity created for a house painter.

At first glance it's a straightforward mark.

Look a little closer and you'll find something more.

The project reminds us of a belief we've held since the day Alkamee was founded: there are no small projects. Every organisation, business or individual has something distinctive worth uncovering.

Our role is to find it.

To reveal it.

To express it simply and memorably.

That's what great branding does.

And that's why a logo is never just a logo.
